Cleaning Your Sea
Glass Jewelry
Gently washing your jewelry with warm water and liquid dish soap on a regular basis will help to prevent tarnish build up on the silver and the sea glass.
Wrights Silver Cream is recommended by many for removing tarnish and cleaning the sea glass. It is a gentle foaming silver cleaner that is safe to use with sea glass. You will find Wright's Silver Cream at most grocery stores, and many hardware and drug stores. Make sure you rinse your jewelry well after cleaning and blot it dry with a soft wash cloth.
Silver dips will remove tarnish from the silver but will not clean the sea glass. And if your jewelry contains any components that have silver with a patina finish, silver dips will likely remove the patina. Polishing cloths may be difficult to use on small silver components and may also leave tarnish smudges on the sea glass. Silver polishing pastes are also not recommended as they tend to leave a residue in the nooks and crannies of the sea glass and wire-work.
Tarnish Stains On Sea Glass
Silver and other elements will naturally tarnish over time. This oxidation can eventually migrate to the sea glass leaving tarnish stains and smudges. Applying baby oil to the sea glass will remove tarnish stains and most types of dirt from sea glass. You can pour baby oil directly onto the sea glass and rub it with your fingers or a cotton ball then wash the entire piece of jewelry with warm water and dish soap. If the mild soap and water doesn’t clean the silver completely, you may use the Wrights Silver Cream to clean the remaining tarnish from the silver.
The Frost
A frosty surface is one of the identifying characteristics of authentic sea glass. However, when worn as jewelry you may want to tone down a heavy frosting and bring out the color of the sea glass. You can do this by placing your sea glass jewelry on a paper towel and applying a very small amount of baby oil with a cotton swab to the sea glass. Then blot off as much of the oil that you can with a paper towel. That way enough will remain on the sea glass to intensify the color without leaving any residue on your clothing. This will not harm the silver or cause it to tarnish.
Even if sea glass is never treated with baby oil the frost will diminish overtime from being handled and worn. The frost becomes more and more transparent from absorbing the body oils of the wearer and from absorbing moisture from the air. You can bring back the frosty look by washing the sea glass with warm water and dish soap.
